Introspection

The COVID-19 Pandemic, I must say, has disrupted daily lives and already claimed the deaths of 60,000 people worldwide. As a result, scientists and doctors have identified Social Distancing as the main precautionary measure and because of that national governments have strategically implemented lockdowns in respective countries. The situation risen from lockdowns has resulted in a global economic crisis and daily wage workers are starving. People are struggling from financial issues and old people are dying. The situation seems grave; however, I am hopeful that normalcy will be restored soon.

Life seems strange right now. We all were busy in earning money for our comfort and in providing food and shelter to our family. It was time we needed a break albeit not in a way we have one right now; but as the famous saying goes “Be careful what you wish for.” Today, we are caged in the four walls of our homes with our respective families. It seems that everything has come to a halt and suddenly everyone has the time to sit down, breathe and introspect.

Nevertheless, I am grateful of the time that we all have right now. Suddenly, we don’t have to wake up in the morning, have breakfast on time and leave for work. We don’t have to meet deadlines and perform routine tasks. We don’t have to meet potential clients and make business deals. We don’t have to complete assignments or study for examinations (only in some cases). When was the last time you woke up without the pressure of work or study? This time has made me realize that how grateful we are that we are still alive in the comforts of our home because a lot of people don’t have shelter. It has made me realize that in order to lead our lives we don’t need a rich and lavish lifestyle because the ones with it are also struggling; and most importantly, it has made me realize the importance of family and what it means to have one.

In this spare time that I have for myself, I recently have watched a Hindi movie about a person who doesn’t want to have kids or a family altogether. He wants to live a life on his own terms with work on weekdays and hook-ups and booze on weekends. Suddenly, he comes to know that he has a 20 something daughter after a casual fling had gone wrong years ago. He is entrusted with the responsibility of his child and at first, hesitantly accepts her. In conclusion, he realizes the importance of family and understands the very existence of life i.e. LOVE.

We fellow human beings are bound together by the universal bond of LOVE and blood relationships strengthen that bond even further. It is worthless to earn so much money if you don’t have anyone to spend them with; it is meaningless to have a big house with empty rooms; it is pointless to have a spacious car without passengers. IT IS HIGH TIME we stopped chasing a corporate position or loads of money just because we wanted to flaunt. When we come across a BMW or a Jaguar on road, we think how it would look like if we were riding it and all others would look at us with envy; honestly, we need to ask ourselves if we really need it. Wouldn’t it be amazing if we desire instead a weekend trip with our long-lost friends or a family dinner or a movie night with our date on a Saturday? I truly believe that we need crave for moments which make our life more enjoyable and give us happiness and pleasure. We need to stop being materialistic and decide between what we want and we really need.

The greatest lesson learnt is that we can live our lives even with basic necessities and so, we should focus more on making truly lasting memories for lifetime.
