Unstraight

Today, I am going to present my thoughts about this very sensitive and taboo subject in the Indian society. Once again, I will want to look at this with a diplomatic approach and support it with theories. I also want views from people who are reading this.

We say that sex is an integral part of our lives. On an average, human beings have enough amount of sex to satisfy themselves. Almost every human has a sexual orientation i.e. a tendency to develop a sexual attraction or a romantic feeling towards another person. It’s not preferably the opposite sex that people are always attracted to. It might be their own sex as well. Yes, I am talking about the Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender (LGBT) community. Before you judge, please stay put to moral grounds and human rights.

Lesbian and Gay is self-explanatory. Bisexuality is the tendency to be attracted towards both genders i.e. a woman might be attracted to men as well as women. They are in between the homosexuality and heterosexuality subtypes. Transgender people have a gender identity that differs from their assigned sex and are often mistaken for intersex. For instance, a woman might think herself as a man and vice versa. Being transgender is independent of sexual orientation though. These people force us to rethink about the established gender stereotypes in our society. We often label certain type of behavior for men and women and when some people try to break that we isolate them and call them different. Transgender people are born that way due to their different brain functioning but that doesn’t mean they are insane or mentally disturbed.

Now let us talk about human sexuality. According to Sigmund Freud, a 20th century neurologist, the unsuccessful resolution of the Oedipus Complex in males and the Electra Complex in females might become a possible reason for homosexuality. The Oedipus Complex in males refers to the child’s unconscious desire for the opposite sex parent at the age of 3-6. Same is the case with Electra Complex developed in females. More about this later. Homosexuality also came into prominence as we civilized and people experimented sexually. Also, according to recent findings straight women may have more fluid sexuality i.e. they might get turned on my men as well as women contrary to heterosexual men being turned on exclusively by women. This also shows that many (and not all) women are not afraid of lesbian encounters.

People might be homosexuals by birth or by choice. Some choose to come out and some don’t. It is important for straight people like us to support them and treat them as equal rather than criticizing them for their sexuality. As of 9th December 2017, Australia has become the latest country to legalize same-sex marriage. Scientists believe that homosexuality or even sexuality is influenced by biological factors and develops at early childhood. It is not a matter of choice but something that is ingrained in them from childhood though they may get to know about it later on in their lives.

The conclusion is that we should support people with different sexuality. Their thoughts and ideas might differ from us but there is nothing inhuman about them to label their sexuality as a mental disorder. After all, we don’t want to be a society supporting human rights and still being called a hypocrite.
